If there is one thing to say about LEGO Star Wars specials, it is that they seem to always get it right. These specials tend to balance the humor with the heart perfectly. One minute you laugh hard and the next you witness a tender moment in the storyline. LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy does this in its perfect “4 Piece” series. It manages to give us all the laughs we expect to get but it also gives us a heartwarming story about brothers, loss, and moving forward. Let’s get into it!
While the recent crop of Star Wars shows having an 8-episode formula, LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy bucks that trend and gives us a fantastic show in half the episodes. The series follows Nerf Herder brothers, Sig and Dev Greebling, voiced by Gaten Matarazzo, & Tony Revolori, who live on the planet, Fenessa. Sig is a huge fan of the Star Wars stories and retells them to those who would listen. Seeing the entire Luke Skywalker saga play out by LEGOs is pretty funny. Sig is a good storyteller but he wants more. While his brother Dev is more carefree and is ready for the next party to attend. After finding a temple the boys remove “Brick” from the wall and everything changes!
The brick that was removed was the “Cornerstone” and it held the universe in its place. By Sig removing it everything in the universe that they know has changed, Their friend Yesi, voiced by Marsai Martin, is now a member of the Rebel Alliance and his brother Dev is not the same anymore. The first episode does a great job of setting up what the next episodes are going to be and they all end in a way that makes you want to see the next episode.
Without giving away too much of the series Sig, Yesi, and Jedi Bob, voiced by Bobby Moynihan, go on an incredible adventure trying to find a Jedi temple to place the cornerstone and repair the galaxy. In their quest, they visit familiar places like Tatooine but there are tweaks to the planet. We meet a different version of Luke Skywalker on Tatooine. This Luke is more laid back and may or may not use the Force in a not-so-Jedi way. What makes this Luke hilarious is that Mark Hamill voiced him and it’s interesting to see this new side of him.
Speaking of sides, we see a slew of characters that are on the Dark Side that will make you giggle. The trailer shows you the big one being Jar Jar Binks or Darth Jar Jar as he is called on the show. Ahmed Best reprises the voice of the lovable Gungan who is portraying a side of this character that we first heard about in fan theories. That is one of the cool things about this series is there are some great twists in the things we loved about the Star Wars movies. The remixing of the vehicles is one of my favorite things about the series. At the moment there are only 3 LEGO sets for this show and hopefully, we will get more. Speaking of vehicles, seeing the Ewoks fly around in modified A-Wings is pretty cool but it is also hilarious to see their reactions when they get shot down. Yes, that sounds morbid, but it is really funny!
The overall theme in Rebuild the Galaxy has to do with the relationship between the two brothers. While Sig spends a lot of his days retelling stories and living through other people’s lives he is missing out on the world in front of him. His brother Dev has a plan to leave their planet it dawns on Sig that he will be left alone with only the memories of his brother and the stories he loves. Seeing how the connection between the brothers changes once the cornerstone is removed makes you feel for Sig and want him to succeed.
Although your heart will ache for Sig, it is when we learn about Jedi Bob’s motive for wanting to replace the stone that we get another punch in the gut. For a “kids” show, LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy gives us a story about loss, grief, and finding your place in the world. Some of these episodes do get heavy and that is what makes it a great show! I feel like families will watch this series over and over.
We were lucky to be invited with other Star Wars content creators to a few roundtables with the cast and writers/executive producers of the show. Watch the video below and we have tagged the others who participated in the description of the video.
Final Thoughts: LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy is a fantastic show that will have you laughing one minute and maybe tearing up the next. This show is a great “thank you” to all of the stories that came before and makes way for a new adventure with Sig Greebling and his brother Dev. The familiar themes of family, longing, and acceptance are all present in this series and they are given a twist with their remixed universe. Families will have a great time watching this series over and over!
Kid-Friendly: LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy is very kid-friendly! You kids will probably watch this series over and over to catch all of the Easter eggs hidden throughout the episodes. Kids will also learn about loss, wanting something better in life, and believing in yourself. This is a fun show for everyone! At one point in the story, there is an “Oh Sith!” spoken which is pretty funny!
Violence: There is animated violence like in the other LEGO Star Wars specials. If your kids have seen those, they will be ok with this one.
The entire Star Wars Galaxy gets completely mixed up when an ordinary nerf-herder, Sig Greebling (Gaten Matarazzo), unearths a powerful artifact from a hidden Jedi temple. He finds himself thrust into adventure in a new, wondrously wild, and twisted version of the galaxy where good guys are bad, bad guys are good, and the fate of all depends on Sig becoming the hero who can put all the pieces back together.
