We have been going to the Disney on Ice shows since the days my daughter was in diapers. Every show was a great time and it was always great to revisit some of our favorite movies by seeing the live performances of the ice skaters.
Feld Entertainment’s latest show, Disney on Ice presents Magic in the Stars is now playing in Chicago and we were lucky to catch the opening night show! Let me tell you friends, the show is a lot of fun and it’s fantastic how the digital backdrop helps enhance each performance.
The show starts with Mickey and friends talking about wishes and it breaks down into individual performances from different movies in the Disney line-up. While we see the usual suspects: Toy Story, Aladdin, Cinderella, we do get new characters on the ice. Lightning McQueen and Mater make an appearance and recreate their infamous tractor tipping scene. Seeing these cars on the ice was pretty cool and something we have never seen before.
Also new in this show was Raya and the Last Dragon, Frozen 2 (Sorry kids, Elsa is not singing Let it go in this show), Encanto and Wish. Seeing Asha from Wish is pretty cool since that movie was just in theaters. This might be one of the quickest transitions from movie to live action performance.
I will say that my favorite moment of the night was hearing the cheers for Encanto. Being that this movie was about a Hispanic family and there were many references in it that I could relate to, I really loved this movie. Once the backdrop transformed to the Casa Madrigal the entire audience went crazy and started cheering and clapping. It felt really good to see it accepted like that.
Friends, one of the great things about these Disney on Ice shows is reliving certain moments from your favorite Disney movie. It felt great seeing the Genie singing “Friend Like Me” and being taken back to the moment I first heard that song. My daughter, who is a teen and loved Tangled as a toddler, lit up when Rapunzel and Eugene came out and sang “I See the Light”. My wife had a huge smile on her face as Elsa sang “Into the Unknown” because that is her favorite song from Frozen 2. Finally, my son loved seeing all of the characters at the end with the digital and real fireworks.
That’s the real magic of these shows. For a few minutes parents are transported back to their childhoods while kids, no matter how old they are, get to be kids again!
