I missed seeing Rock Dog when it was out in the theaters and was excited to get a copy to review with my family. The story is one that we have seen many times: the father has a set goal for his son. The son has his own dreams and goals and before long the son’s new talent comes in handy. Now why that may sound like a quick recap of the movie, there is so much more to it.
With any movie that comes out nowadays, I always see it from a parent’s perspective and that is what made me enjoy Rock Dog a little more than my children. As parents, we want our children to follow in our footsteps, but we also want them to find themselves in the world. Sometimes we, as parents, do not like like the goal or dream that our children have, but we have to let them experience things on their own and see what happens.
This is what happens with Bodi. While his father, voiced by J.K. Simmons, wants Bodi to be the protector of their village, Bodi wants to play music instead of standing guard for hours at a time in a fake guard suit. What ends up happening is Bodi leaving the village and trying to find Angus Scattergood. A musican who’s words have set him on a mission to become a famous rock star. During his voyage Bodi learns about friendship, betrayal and believing in himself.
When a radio falls from the sky into the hands of a wide-eyed Tibetan Mastiff, he leaves home to fulfill his dream of becoming a musician, setting into motion a series of completely unexpected events.
