When I was younger I loved to write stories and poems. I also loved to Dj and would spend my Saturdays practicing from sun up to sun down. Now while I did not call any of these things my hobbies, those around me would call them that. I knew that with a lot of practice, I would get better and potentially do something with these skills but with the lack of support from those around me I slowly added away from practicing with my turntables.
I would still write though. I would write stories for myself and ended up writing for the school newspaper. I always loved being able to combine words that end up creating a world that has never been seen before. Little by little I would share my writings but I always kept them close to my chest. Now, I don’t write as many stories as I did when I was younger but I still write.
What does this all have to do with The Fabelmans? The movie shows us what happens when someone with an artistic spirit is given support by those around them. We see young Sammy Fabelman enchanted by what he sees on the big screen and wants to replicate it at home. This leads to a fascination with creating movies with his sisters and keeps growing and growing.
It is great to see how this passion of his grows into something more than a hobby, but we also see how those who only see this as a hobby. The dichotomy between his parents and seeing how their artsy vs intellect mindsets shape the type of person that Sammy will be. Sammy uses his artful side to make amazing movies with his friends while using his dad’s intellect to enhance his movies. There is a moment when his father, played by Paul Dano, compares how what they both do is similar. Instead of continuing to push that narrative, he switches the conversation to asking Sammy when is he going to start thinking about a career and forget this hobby.
The Fabelmans is a great movie and will make a great addition to your movie collection. Keep reading below about the home release and enter to win one of 2 digital copies of this multi-Oscar-nominated movie.
Final Thoughts: The Fabelmans is a great story about following your passions and the people that support you. We see through this movie that Steven Speilberg is sharing with us his life story. While we are able to appreciate his genius now, seeing how he got there makes one appreciate his movies even more.
Kid-Friendly: The tone of the movie plays out like a family drama. There are some triggering scenes that deal with racism and divorce. These scenes can stir strong emotions in children but can also cause some great conversations about them. The movie is also a great way to show kids how their interest in something can lead to amazing things.
Violence: There are a few scenes of young Sammy being bullied in the movie. There are movements of Sammy and his mother getting into an argument but there is nothing that is too intense for kids.
