My Dad the Bounty Hunter Series Review & Interview

We talked a little about the new Netflix show My Dad the Bounty Hunter a while back. We could not say much about the show because it was not released but now we can tell you a little bit more about the show and how great it is. It is fantastic to see a show about an African American family that is co-parenting their children and there is no negativity between the parents. The show gives us a great story and hopefully will continue to give us more adventures of this family in seasons to come.

Here’s what we wrote before with added notes about the season.

The first episode introduces us to Terry’s family. We meet his wife Tess and their children, Lisa and Sean. While Terry and Tess are separated, they are co-parenting their children and trying to work things out. Yes, Terry has not been as reliable as Tess wants him to be but he is trying his best to make things right. Terry is taking the kids to be with him for the weekend when he gets a visit from his employer for an important mission. This is where the adventure starts. Lisa and Sean decide to sneak into Terry’s car and become stowaways on his latest mission.

The entire series deals with Terry finding out that his kids have stowed away on his ship and how he is going to get them home. During this adventure, we see the relationship between Terry and his children. This is the heart of the show. We see how the relationship between Terry and his kids grows. As with parenting in general, the kids learn something about Terry and he learns about himself through them. Parenting is not an easy job but being a bounty hunter and a dad makes things a little more challenging.

As a dad, there are many moments in the show that I was able to relate to. Yes, this is an animated show but it is not afraid to go there in some moments. We see Terry get hit by some truth bombs by his daughter about his involvement in her life. It’s moments like this where we, as parents, are pointed a mirror at ourselves and ask how involved are we in our children’s lives. As the series continues we see Terry’s reaction to these truths and how he tries to be the father that his children need.

My Dad the Bounty Hunter has the feeling of an 80’s sci-fi adventure with a lot of nods to 80s movies. I mean there is a school play that is shown that would make Max Fischer from the movie Rushmore proud. The animation transitions from 3D animation to 2D animation in certain parts which just enhances the viewing experience of the show. The character design is another highlight of the show. Not only are the main characters stunning but the aliens that are encountered are also on another level. From the cute Chillions to Vax to Glorlox all of the aliens are unique and hopefully, we’ll see some action figures soon…or at least some Chillions plushies.

We were lucky to be invited to a roundtable interview with the cast and creators of My Dad the Bounty Hunter where we got to ask questions about the show and the family dynamics. It was fun to talk to that cast and hear their thoughts on their characters and Terry’s shoe game.
