Growing up I was always a fan of The Goonies and The Monster Squad. Seeing kids my age going on crazy adventures was always a lot of fun. These are the fun movies that I always tell my kids about and enjoy watching their reactions as the movie unfolds. Fright Krewe is an animated show coming soon to Hulu and falls in the same vein of these movies. Due to this being an animated show a lot more can be done in terms of monsters and scares.

The show follows five kids who all live in New Orleans and go to the same school. While they are not the best of friends due to an incident in the classroom they are all grouped together for a detention-type activity. During this activity they unbeknownstly release an ancient power that threatens to destroy the world. The kids also get some ancient powers that will assist them to fight off this ancient curse.

We were lucky to watch the first 10 episodes do we will keep this review spoiler-free. The first show perfectly sets up what the series is going to be about. We get to see how these characters all know each other and their relationships. It follows the similar troupe of their being a jock, a smart kid, a popular kid, a shy kid, and the one who will eventually be the leader. Think of the group as a modern day Breakfast Club that has been joined together to due a detention. While these troupes are great for those who watch to identify or relate to a character it’s also great to see how their connections change as the show progresses.

As previously mentioned, the kids are united/synced with an ancient ghost that gives them powers connected to their attributes. For example, Stanley, the jock, gets powers that everything that he touches he automatically knows what the item is made of and different facts about it. While this mey seem like a strange power to have, it slowly comes into play as the season goes by. It is fascinating to see how the kids adapt to their powers and use them in the series. While it may be one of the spokiest powers to have, Maybe is able to go to the”Spirit World” and talk to the dead. Again, we see in the show how this power can be very helpful to the kids.

Being that Eli Roth is one of the producers for the show you would expect it to be very gory or graphic and while it does have it’s moments, the show is very family friendly with a few jump scares. Fright Krewe is a fun and spooky show that we hope gives us more seasons during the Halloween part of the year. The are plenty of twists and turns that you can feel the series lasting long after these 10 epsidoes are done. Who knows, maybe one season we can get a live version of the show. That would be interesting!

An ancient prophecy and a Voodoo Queen put misfit teens in charge of saving New Orleans from the biggest demonic threat it’s faced in almost two centuries. But, honestly? Saving the world might be easier than becoming friends.
