Deadpool and Wolverine Review

As fans, we always want to thank the creators that give us joy. For those of us growing up in the 2000’s we were lucky to see the first iteration of the X-Men on the big screen and see the beginning of the Marvel universe. (If we are being real, we know it all started with Blade in 1988.) While we did not get comic-accurate suits we did get to see all of our favorite X-Men in their first of many adventures. 20th Century Fox gave us some amazing moments but also had some missed opportunities. As fans, we might not be able to thank the studio heads for giving us these movies but thankfully the Deadpool and Wolverine movie is here to not only say thank you to the Fox era of movies but also lead us into a new era of Marvel movies.

Writing a review about Deadpool and Wolverine is like walking through a landmine. As much as we try to not spoil anything we have to tip-toe with the words that we use. I will start by saying this: There are a lot of great cameos in this movie and they are not there just to make you point and say “Ohh, look who it is!” The people in this movie are there for a reason. All of the characters have a purpose and are part of the storyline. Now while this might be overwhelming for some it is not as overwhelming as all of the easter eggs and one-liners thrown in the movie. I am getting a little ahead of myself so let me backtrack for a minute.

If you have seen the trailers, you will know that Deadpool is being tasked to save his universe and he recruits Wolverine to help him. The two must work together to save Deadpool’s friends which is all that Deadpool has in the world. He feels that his life has no purpose and his friends are the only thing that makes him feel complete. Being that Wolverine has died in Logan, Deadpool must time jump to bring Wolverine back to help him. Again, I do not want to spoil anything but a brilliant montage set to Huey Lewis and the News’ “Power of Love” is sure to make you laugh and point at the screen like “I don’t believe they did that!”

Speaking of the unbelievable, it is surprising that Disney is putting this movie out there for the public to see. It feels like Deadpool decided to see how close to the line they can take it and just push their little toe over this line. The amount of blood that is sprayed around is spectacular. Deadpool is known for his quips but in this movie, it feels like those are amplified and it is hard at times to keep up with his one-liners. One of the things that is fantastic that we get is the brutalness of the fights between Deadpool and Wolverine. At times it feels like you are looking at panels from a comic book due to how graphic and brutal they are. It almost feels like watching Roddy Piper and Keith David fighting in They Live. All of the fights are at this level and hopefully, they will continue to be this way in films to come.

Deadpool and Wolverine give fans something that we have wanted to see since X-Men Origins: Wolverine, a proper Deadpool and Wolverine team-up. There are many iconic images from comics recreated on the screen and easter eggs galore. Yes, it would help if you have seen the Fox era of Marvel movies but you can always catch up on those and go see Deadpool and Wolverine again. Deadpool and Wolverine is an amazing superhero film that will take Marvel in a new direction and I am excited to see where it goes. The two main leads will get all the praise but Emma Corrin as Cassandra Nova is a villain that will not only put a shiver down your spine but will make you watch what you say around her. She is truly evil and fans should enjoy her performance. Last note: The needle drops are on point!

Thank you, 20th Century Fox for what you did with the X-Men. Thank you for the memories and thank you for making the path that lead to Deadpool and Wolverine.

Final Thoughts: Deadpool and Wolverine is what happens when a studio trusts the creators to do what they want. This movie has some incredible moments, some amazing fight scenes, and closure for some entities that will not be named. There are a few issues with the storyline but whenever you have a movie dealing with time jumps things will get a little fuzzy. The fights between Deadpool and Wolverine are brutal in the same vein as Roddy Piper and Keith David in They Live. There is a lot in this movie for fans of the Fox movies and the comic books but for the casual fan, many things might go over their heads. Deadpool and Wolverine will give you the same feeling you felt when you saw Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: No Way Home for the first time. Stay for the after-credits scenes.

Kid-Friendly: If you have let your kids watch the other Deadpool movies, shame on you! (Just kidding!) Deadpool was Rated R for a reason and there is nothing kid-friendly about this. The curse words and sexual innuendos flow like the blood from the severed arms in this movie. As with other R-rated movies, I suggest seeing it first and deciding if it is too much for your kids to see.

Violence: This is a Deadpool movie and from the opening sequence the blood just flows.

From Marvel Studios:
Marvel Studios presents their most significant mistake to date—”Deadpool & Wolverine.” A listless Wade Wilson toils away in civilian life. His days as the morally flexible mercenary, Deadpool, behind him. When his homeworld faces an existential threat, Wade must reluctantly suit-up again with an even more reluctantlier… reluctanter? Reluctantest? He must convince a reluctant Wolverine to—Fuck. Synopses are so fucking stupid.
