Monster High 2 Review & Giveaway

I only know of the Monster High series because my daughter was into their cartoons and dolls when she was younger. Monster High 2 is an interesting take on segregation and the fear of the unknown within a school of monsters. If you have not seen the first movie there is a quick recap at the beginning of the movie but it might be nice to reviist it to learn about the characters.

This movie takes place a year after the events of the first movie. Clawdeen Wolf, played by Miia Harrish, has become popular due to her saving the school and people accepting that she is half werewolf and half human. As she reunites with her friends, Draculaura and Frankie Stein, played by Nayah Damasen and Ceci Balagot respectively, she is ready for a new year at school. Over the break Frankie got herself some upgrades that has made her stronger and given her electricity powers. While the upgrades might be cool she is still trying to get used to them. We learn later in the movie why she decided to get these upgrades in the first place.

While this movie is aimed at kids, there are strong themes of belonging thrown into the mix. Fresh from her Scaris, France vacation, Toralei Stripe, played by Salena Qureshi, tells the crew that witches don’t belong at the school since she was attacked by them while away. After an incident at the school involving witches, Toralei makes a stand that witchcraft should be banned from the school. This situation puts Clawdeen in a bad situation since her best friend, Draculaura, is part witch. This also is bad for her because Clawdeen is in the running to be the schools “Prefect” which follows in her mother’s footsteps.

The banning of witchcraft and the treatment of half-monsters is talked about by the girls and Clawdeen wants to be prefect because she wants all monsters to be treated equally. She feels the way witches are being treated is reminiscent of the way monsters are treated in the real world. After a trip to help a friend in the real world do other monsters see that their way of thinking needs to be changed.

Monster High 2 does not get too preachy in their lesson which is great for the age that it is aimed at. While some of thespecial effects are cheesy the message still comes across loud and clear. The songs are a bit catchy but while I might not be humming them later on, there might be younger kids that will sing them and relate to the lyrics about belonging and friendship. The movie does set up another adventure with the crew of Monster High and we will have to wait to see when part 3 comes out.

When it comes to the special features the DVD comes with the standard making of documentary, along with a segment about getting to know the characters. The Breakdown is great to give those that have not see the first one to learn about the characters. I did find it weird that when the video ends there is a “Subscribe” button that pops up on the screen. It’s almost as if these videos were just added from their YouTube channel to the disc. The music videos are also a fun touch to watch.
