Horror fans have been eating well with the number of horror films released lately. Dolly, the latest movie by Rod Blackhurst, takes the audience on a hellish ride that will keep them on the edge of their seats.
Dolly begins with Chase, Seann William Scott, planning to propose to his girlfriend, Macy, Fabianne Therese, on a hike in the forest. They stumble across porcelain dolls tied and nailed to the trees, and instead of leaving the forest, they continue walking. As Chase is getting ready to propose, they hear the song from a children’s toy echoing from the woods. Chase decides to go check it, and then the horror begins.
Do Not Go Into The Woods
Dolly is broken up into chapters. Each chapter’s title is one word that fills the audience in on what they will see. Seeing Macy try to escape this monstrosity builds the anxiety level of the audience. Since Macy is separated from Chase, the audience does not know what will happen to her. Macy is caught by this maniac and taken home.
Inside the house, we see Dolly’s motive. She treats Macy like a doll and dresses her up, and treats her like a baby. Macy is dressed in doll-like clothing and is forced to eat, drink milk, and be burped by Dolly. The tension in some of these moments is thick and makes you wish you were not in the room with Macy and Dolly.

Do Not Go Into That House
In typical slasher fashion, the home that Dolly lives in is scary as hell. The rooms are decorated with porcelain dolls every where. The home looks like it reaks of mold and death! When trapped in the house, Macy hears a voice from another person that is also trapped in the house. That person is Tobe, played by Ethan Suplee. There is something mysterious about Tobe because it seems he knows a lot about Dolly than he is letting Macy know. While Tobe feels like he can be a savior, the audience soon sees his true motive.
Dolly is Grimy
Dolly is filmed in 16mm which gives it a grindhousey look. You can see scratches on the images now and then and the sound seeps into your skin. The close-ups of Dolly’s hands stained in blood make you wonder how many years they have been killing people. The look of Dolly’s mask is simple, but the details in the eye and neck of the mask are fantastic. While Jason has his “ki-ki-ki-ma-ma-ma”, Dolly’s heaving breathing will stay with you long after the movie ends.
Final Thoughts: If you were to take the final 20 minutes of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and extend it into a full-length movie, you would have Dolly. The movie is full of anxiety-inducing moments that will have you fearing the forest, porcelain dolls, and shovels. Dolly is horrifying in concept and makes use of its short runtime. Fabianne Therese shines as Macy, whereas Max the Impaler is menacing as Dolly. The movie has a few kills, but the few shown on screen are brutal and gory. Make sure to stay through the credits and pay attention to the song lyrics.
Violence: Dolly has some brutal kills that might be too much for squeamish people. The level of anxiety it builds might also be too much for some.
Kid Friendly: I would not recommend young kids watch this.
A young woman, Macy, fights for survival after being abducted by a deranged, monster-like figure who wants to raise her as their child.
