Getting the Truth on Disclosure Day

Steven Spielberg has blessed us all with some amazing movies about life from other planets. From Close Encounters of the Third Kind, E.T., and War of the Worlds, he has managed to humanize what others deem a threat to mankind. Disclosure Day is a heist movie disguised in a sci-fi shell that asks: What if the truth is revealed to the world?

The movie starts in the thick of it. We see Josh O’Connor‘s character, Dr. Daniel Kellner, looking distraught as he engages with agents over a backpack and a missing woman. As the interaction moves outside of the pavilion, we learn a little about what is going on and see the woman, Jane (Eve Hewson), being released to him. This sets off a series of events that leaves the audience wanting to know more about what is going on.

The Key Players

WardEX is a group that holds access to information that they do not want the public to see. They play a key role in the movie of trying to stop Daniel from releasing the information. Hugo Wakefield (Colman Domingo) guides Daniel on this journey and informs him of where he must go next. Margaret Fairchild (Emily Blunt) is a weather person who is connected to everything that is going on. Again, Spielberg does a great job giving the audience little information to keep them glued to the screen. Once the three of these characters meet, things take a whole new twist.

Is the Truth Dangerous?

A few questions brought up during the movie are: What happens to the world once this information gets out? And who do we think we are keeping this from the world? Depending on your religion or how empathetic you are to the world around you, this information may shock your world. The character of Jane battles with her religious teachings, wondering why God would do this to us. Daniel battles with the fear he has based on an experience from his childhood. All of these feelings are valid because they will connect with many people in the audience.

The Big Reveal

Just like in E.T. and Close Encounters of the Third Kind, everything comes to a head in the final moments. To say that seeing certain images will not make you emotional is an overstatement. Spielberg must know something about what is going on in the world to bombard us with images that make us question humanity and what our role in this world is. Not only that, but we will look at animals in a different way after this movie. Disclosure Day gives us a lot to take in and ends with a call to action. Will we listen to that call is the real question.

Final Thoughts: Disclosure Day is an intense heist/sci-fi movie that deals with information hidden from the world for eight decades. Through the movie, we learn about an organization that has been using its findings for its advantage and has proclaimed itself the guardian of the information. The film raises questions about religion, humanity, and the right to own others. The cast is amazing! Colman Domingo feels underused while Courtney Grace steals the final few minutes of the movie. The movie will create some conversations.

Violence: There is some violence throughout the movie. There are a few fights, a wrestling match in the beginning, and car chases. Scenes of people hurting themselves with sharp utensils also occur in the movie.

Kid-Friendly: Disclosure Day has a slow pace to it. Due to this, it might not hold the attention of children younger than 10. It is a cool story for them to watch, but it may drag on too much for them to handle.

If you found out we weren’t alone, if someone showed you, proved it to you, would that frighten you? This summer, the truth belongs to seven billion people.

We are coming close to … Disclosure Day.
