Mortal Kombat 2 is for the Gamers

Let me start by saying this: If you are going into Mortal Kombat 2 looking for a thought-provoking movie, this is not it! Mortal Kombat 2 knows that it is a movie for the fans of the game. While it tried to use Cole Young (Lewis Tan) as the entry point in the first movie (2022), this time it sticks to the characters we all know and love.

Moral Kombat 2 starts with a young Kitana (Sophia Xu) watching her father (Desmond Chiam) get ready to fight Shao Kahn (Martyn Ford). The beginning is a short origin story about how she became a ward of Shao Kahn and fights for him in the tournaments. Although Kitana is his “daughter,” she knows that there has to be a better way to live in his kingdom. The plot is the same as in the other movies: Earth’s greatest fighters must battle it out to save Earthrealm. You don’t need more exposition than that.

Hiroyuki Sanada as “Scorpion” in New Line Cinema’s “Mortal Kombat II,” a Warner Bros. Pictures release.

This time around, Johnny Cage (Karl Urban)is recruited to participate, and he does not disappoint. After a clip from one of his action movies, we see Cage sitting at a comic convention selling autographs and merchandise from his career. He does not look his best, and you even hear people talking about how he looks. The meeting between Cage, Sonya Blade (Jessica McNamee) & Lord Raiden (Tadanobu Asano) is pretty hilarious and sets up the humor that is displayed throughout the movie.

When it comes to the fight scenes in Mortal Kombat 2, it is a great homage to the video game. A few of the arenas showcased in the film are the Pit Bottom and The Dead Pool. Seeing these two arenas on the big screen is pretty great. What is better is seeing how the characters use their surroundings in these fights. During the Dead Pool scene, you know someone is going to fall into the acid water, and you anxiously await that moment.

This is what makes Mortal Kombat 2 so much fun! It gives the audience what it wants. It has some fantastic fight sequences and some nods to the games. This is what a summer popcorn movie should be: A lot of fun!

As the story moves along, we meet some new characters and say goodbye to some, too. Yes, the stakes are high this time around, and your favorite character might not survive. By taking this route, Mortal Kombat 2 takes the audience on a ride that they might not expect, and that is a great thing. While the movie gives the fans what they want, it also gives them something they might not want.

Will there be another Mortal Kombat movie? Who knows, but this one shows that sometimes you have to give the audience what they want and hope they come out to support!

Final Thoughts: Mortal Kombat 2 is exactly what we need it to be: non-stop action, kick-ass fights, cheesy dialogue, & a great homage to the video games! A few misses here & there, but overall it’s a fun time in the theaters.

Violence: It’s a Mortal Kombat movie, so there’s a lot of violence and gore in the fights.

Kid Friendly: If your kid has seen the other Mortal Kombat movies, they should be ok with this. A few F-bombs dropped by one of the characters who has a very dirty mouth, but is a comedic element in the movie.

From New Line Cinema comes the latest high-stakes installment in the blockbuster video game franchise in all its brutal glory, Mortal Kombat II. This time, the fan favorite champions—now joined by Johnny Cage himself—are pitted against one another in the ultimate, no-holds barred, gory battle to defeat the dark rule of Shao Kahn that threatens the very existence of the Earthrealm and its defenders.
