Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire Review

When we last saw Kong he became the newest inhabitant of Hollow Earth and Godzilla went back to finding a spot to sleep. Godzilla X Kong is the next chapter in the Monsterverse series and while the plot is paper thin, the action in it is not. Kong has been trying to find more like his species in Hollow Earth while Godzilla is protecting Upper Earth from any Kajui that tries to wreak havoc. It’s a symbiote relationship that the humans and Godzilla have created but the humans are the ones cleaning up the mess after it is over.

Meanwhile, in Hollow Earth, Kong goes on daily search missions trying to find more of his kind while fighting and eating those that get in his way. If we have learned anything from movies in the past we know that when you find what you are looking for it might not always be a good thing. Kong finds others of his kind and learns that they are not friendly. What he thinks will be a simple meet-and-greet with a baby Kong, turns into a fight for his life. There is a moment in this fight when the audience breaks into laughter and you will have to see for yourself why that is.

Back on Earth, we are reintroduced to Rebecca Hall’s character Dr. Ilene Andrews, and her Iwi Tribe daughter, Jia, played by Kaylee Hottle. Jai is having difficulty adjusting to her new life and is getting visions of something that is to come. Along with them, Brian Tyree Henry’s Bernie Hayes comes back to assist Dr. Andrews with an anomaly that no one else can solve. We are also introduced to Trapper, played by Dan Stevens, who is a vet of sorts who handles working with strange animals. His introduction is a bit over the top but then so is all the action that we see in this movie.

What we learn from Dr. Andrews is that there is an ancient prophecy about the Scar King, his plans to escape the realm he is in, and a member of the Iwi Tribe bringing back another titan to stop this from happening. That is really all you need to know about this movie. Scar King is trying to break out and Godzilla and Kong are the world’s protectors. This is the main reason the humans are in this movie, to let you know what is happening and for the odd joke every now and then. Can you imagine Godzilla looking at the screen and telling you why he is preparing for a future fight? That will take you out of the movie…or maybe not!

Once the storyline is established we get to the reason we all go to see this movie: BIG MONSTERS FIGHTING! There are plenty of fights in this movie that fill up the screen, so I highly recommend seeing it on IMAX! Sometimes it is hard to see everything going on at once but these fights are brutal. Scar King is ruthless and his minions are pretty mean too. Godzilla is more of a supporting character in this movie, even though his name is first on the title, but I wish we saw more of him in it. When Kong and Godzilla do team up it is fantastic but this only happens in the final third of the movie.

Final Thoughts: Godzilla X Kong is non-stop action and a fun time in the theaters. Although the plot is bare bones, the action is the main draw for this movie. Kong & Godzilla team up to take down the Scar King and deliver a no-holds-bar fight that is pretty incredible to see on a big screen. The humans are mainly in the movie to fill you in on what is happening and fulfill a prophecy written millions of years ago. This one deserves to be seen on the biggest screen possible but maybe during a matinee. There is nothing after the credits to suggest what is coming next.

Kid Friendly: The film is PG-13 for “creature violence and action.” There are moments of Kong eating some of the smaller animals. Kids will enjoy seeing these huge monsters fighting each other and cheering on their favorite ones. This movie was made with younger kids and teens in mind.

Violence: The violence in the movie is the monster fighting each other. There are cuts and hints of blood but nothing that is too out there in this fantasy movie.

The epic battle continues! Legendary Pictures’ cinematic Monsterverse follows up the explosive showdown of ”Godzilla vs. Kong” with an all-new adventure that pits the almighty Kong and the fearsome Godzilla against a colossal undiscovered threat hidden within our world, challenging their very existence—and our own. “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” delves further into the histories of these Titans and their origins, as well as the mysteries of Skull Island and beyond.
